Assessment of therapists' attitudes towards BDSM  / Katherine Kelsey ... [et al.].

Psychology and Sexuality, 4 (2013) 3 (sep), p. 255-267
bron: Psychology and Sexuality jaargang: 4 (2013) 3 (sep), p. 255-267
samenvatting: Participants in alternative or ?kinky? sexual behaviours are a sizable enough minority that psychotherapists are likely to see them in their practices. However, those who engage in bondage and discipline (BD), dominance and submission (DS) and sadism and masochism (SM) (BDSM) are concerned that mental health-care providers will view BDSM as evidence of psychopathology. This research employed an Internet-based survey of 766 therapists in the United States to assess therapists? attitudes towards the BDSM community. Seventy-six per cent of the sample reported having treated at least one client who engaged in BDSM, although only 48% perceived themselves to be competent in this area. Attitudes towards BDSM were related to socio-demographic variables and self-perceived competence. [Copies are available at http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/19419899.2012.655255#abstract ]

Queer BDSM Intimacies : Critical Consent and Pushing Boundaries  /

samenvatting: This is the first book-length empirical study of lesbian, transgender and queer BDSM practices, identities, relationships and communities. Based on interviews and participant observation, Queer BDSM Intimacies explores various women's and queer BDSM spaces and networks in the USA and Western Europe over a period of five years. While research on alternative forms of sexuality, genders and relationships has been booming recently, the particular experiences and perspectives of this group have yet to receive sufficient attention. Robin Oke Bauer shows that queer BDSM practitioners have created unique social spaces through critical consent-making processes. These spaces are suited to explore not only their own identities beyond common binary categorizations of man/woman and homo/heterosexual, but to create new forms of living, gender, sexuality, intimacy and collectivity. The transgressive nature of BDSM allows them to push their own and social boundaries, engaging with social difference and power dynamics, appropriating them for their own pleasures.

Playing with power : Kink, Race and Desire  / Michelle Liang.

samenvatting: I choose kink as my frame of study since kink and desire contain some of the most intimate effects that society exerts on our existence. Popular cultur - ?aided by the release of the film 50 Shades of Grey (widely critiqued by the kink community as an inaccurate depiction of kink) - conceives of BDSM/kink as a form of sex involving pain or domination, oftentimes including implements such as whips and handcuffs. In reality, kinksters generally understand kink to be the consensual staging of power or the transgression of social boundaries of grossness and sexual normality, sometimes involving sex but other times role-plays such as mommy/baby or petplay that do not necessarily require sex. Building upon Anne McClintock's research on fetishism, this thesis investigates kink as the 'historical subculture that draws its symbolic logic from changing social contradictions,' the complicated web of our most intimate desires shaped by social anxieties. In kink, we explore these implications of societal power structures, instead of ignoring them, through avenues (theoretically) of consent, communication, and connection. It is not an obligation to examine these desires borne out of our personal and communal pasts; suppression can be a valid survival mechanism for many marginalized communities. However, to prevent the unintentional reproduction of oppressive power structures, paying attention to the enactment of desire is crucial, and therein lies the significance of kink research. While many of my interlocutors interchange the terms 'kink' and 'BDSM' or use them inconsistently in daily life, I separate them in this thesis for the sake of clarity. I use kink to refer to the general act or practice, fetish to refer to the larger Dutch kink community, and BDSM to refer to several distinct Dutch subcommunities I discuss in Chapter 2.

Affirmation, compartmentalization, and isolation: narratives of identity sentiment among kinky people  / Sam D. Hughes & Phillip L. Hammack.

Psychology & Sexuality, 10 (2019) 2, p. 149-168
bron: Psychology & Sexuality jaargang: 10 (2019) 2 , p. 149-168
samenvatting: With heightened cultural visibility and greater opportunities for connection, individuals with kinky sexual desires (e.g. BDSM, sexual fetishism, sexual role-playing) are increasingly constructing sexual identities that foreground their kink-oriented desires. However, we know little about how kinky individuals negotiate stigma as they construct sexual identities and engage in intimate practices which provide meaning and coherence to their sense of self. This study examined identity sentiment among an international sample of 265 kink-identified individuals. Participants were asked whether they feel negative, positive, or mixed about their kink identities. An exploratory latent class analysis of narrative data revealed four distinct types of stories: unelaborated affirmation, elaborated affirmation, compartmentalization, and isolation. Stories revealed that stigma, concealment, isolation, and self-pathologization represented sources of stress and negative self-evaluation. Involvement in a kink community and viewing one's kink identity as a journey of growth and exploration were described as helping participants develop resiliency against societal stigma and mental health challenges. Implications of these findings for social psychological theories related to stigma, narrative, and minority stress are discussed.

Sexual Outsiders : Understanding BDSM Sexualities and Communities  /

samenvatting: This book delves into the experiences of individuals in BDSM communities. While misunderstandings surrounding these communities prevail, BDSM sexuality cuts across race, gender, nationality, and sexual orientation. BDSM describes forms of sexuality that incorporate restraint, pressure, sensation, training, and elements of both erotic and non-erotic power exchange between the engaged parties. Some BDSM 'scenes' include roleplaying, spanking, blindfolds, ropes, and erotic costuming. This book is designed as a guide for BDSM community members who must wade through the quagmire of unique problems they face: coming out to family, friends and partners; distinguishing abusive relationships from healthy consensual ones; finding and developing community; overcoming shame and denial; exploring whether BDSM sexuality can be a healing tool; gaining access to quality, culturally competent psychotherapy; and finding strategies to develop a healthy sexual self-esteem in the face of current medical and social standards that view them as sick or pathological. The book also serves as an educational primer for those whose partners, friends, and family members are involved in BDSM. In terms of challenges faced by BDSM communities, the most significant is living with a stigmatized sexuality shame, prejudice, discrimination, isolation, depression, and a lack of adequate, competent mental health care. Issues such as coming out as a sexual minority, finding community and partners, and dealing with scenes and relationships that go wrong are some the common experiences shared by members of BDSM communities. Sexual Outsiders employs common sense, good humor, and vivid anecdotes while incorporating basic ideas about human behavior, psychology, philosophy, interviews, history, and clinical case studies to illustrate the real lives and experiences of men and women in BDSM communities. Anyone wanting to learn more about this unique, and more-common-than-you-think expression of sexuality, will find in these pages insight into the various challenges BDSM practitioners face, and the many strengths that people in the BDSM communities have developed in the face of social stigma and prejudice.

Queering consent: Negotiating critical consent in les-bi-trans-queer BDSM contexts  / Robin Bauer.

Sexualities, 24 (2021) 5-6 (sep), p. 767-783
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 24 (2021) 5-6 (sep), p. 767-783
samenvatting: In BDSM community discourse as well as research on BDSM, consent has been treated as an uncomplicated given, often relying on liberal or post-feminist notions of consent as a rational contract between equals until recently. The results of a qualitative study on the les-bi-trans-queer BDSM communities in contrast highlight that on the one hand, queer BDSM technologies of negotiating consent are valuable tools in moving away from heteronormative and liberal notions of consent towards a culture of sexual consent as communicative. On the other hand, limits to BDSM consent technologies are discussed and it is argued that consent needs to be critical and developed collectively.

It's complicated: Sex and the BDSM subculture  / Julie Fennell.

Sexualities, 24 (2021) 5-6 (sep), p. 784-802
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 24 (2021) 5-6 (sep), p. 784-802
samenvatting: Drawing from extensive insider ethnographic work and an internet survey with a convenience sample of 1642 BDSM practitioners, I show that the social context of the BDSM subculture has a profound impact on pansexual BDSM practitioners' interpretation of the relationship between BDSM and sex. Greater involvement in the public BDSM subculture and participation in feminine Dominance/masculine submission are both strongly associated with less preference for and experience of sexual BDSM. Greater involvement in the BDSM subculture increases participants' likelihood of viewing their sexuality in terms of BDSM but decreases their likelihood of viewing BDSM in sexual terms. BDSM practitioners who meet new BDSM partners in BDSM subcultural contexts, even ones where sex is allowed, are much less likely to have sex with their partners than practitioners who met anywhere else. I argue that research should focus more on the social factors that influence participants' experience and interpretation of BDSM, particularly on the influence of the BDSM subculture, and that theorists should think more broadly about the social determinants of 'sex' and 'sexual experience.'
